Laguna Platinum Series 17” Variable Speed Drill Press

Used for drill holes into different materials. It is possible to quickly line up something to drill many holes accurately and square.

  • Specifications:
    • Motor: 1.5HP
    • RPM: 200-2600rpm
    • Table: Pivoting
    • Table Dimension: 13.5”x13.5”
    • Chuck: 1/2″ keyed chuck
    • Travel: 3”
    • Height: 67”
  • Usage:
    • Clamping Materials:
      • Materials must either be clamped securely to the table, or in the vise.
        • To keep from drilling into the table or vise, either clamp waste material below the workpiece, or use parallels for the vise.
    • Boring:
      • If you are drilling a large hole into anything other than softwood, use multiple drill bits to ‘step up’ to the diameter hole you want drilled.
        • Depending on how thick the material is, how hard the material is, and how large the final hole must be, one smaller pilot hole, or sometimes two are necessary.
          • For example if you want to drill a 1/2″ hole into a piece of thick aluminum, first drill a pilot hole with a 1/4” drill bit, then step up to a 3/8″ and then drill the 1/2″ hole.
      • Use the spray bottle of coolant while boring plastic or aluminum. Use oil if boring steel. Spray onto where you will be drilling, not a whole lot is necessary, but ‘enough’ to the point where what you are drilling into and the drill bit itself are slightly lubricated.
        • This will keep you from dulling the drill bits from excessive heat, or melting your plastic.
      • A special bit is required for PC boards, made of tungsten, as PCBs are made out of fiberglass and will quickly wear away at a normal drill bit.
      • If you hear a chattering noise, it is the drill bit bouncing around on the material, and means you are running the drill press to fast. Slow the motor’s RPM  down.
    • Boring Speed:
      • The machine must be on in order to change the speed.
        • Unlock the lever by twisting the handle, it is then possible to slide the lever to the proper speed.
